If you've been on the City Archives web site recently you might have noticed our new Flickr logo at the bottom of our home page. Starting last week, we began loading photos from our graphics collections onto this site. The photos are being organized into subject galleries to facilitate viewing. 125 photos are now on the site with more to follow soon. Eventually we hope to have several thousand photos available for viewing.
The City Archives has an extensive collection of more than 10,000 visual images of Providence. Highlights include 2,200 Providence Redevelopment Agency photos taken in the late 1950s and 1960s (many predevelopment) depicting the Lippitt Hill, Randall Square, Weybosset Hill, and Central-Classical neighborhoods as well as the West River area of the city. The John Hess collection of 1,500 spectacular photos of Scituate Villages prior to their inundation in 1915 for the reservoir is another important visual resource as are the 3,000 slides of the Downtown that spans the decades from the 1960s thru 1980s. Another 3,000 historical photos, including an important collection of aerial photos, round out the collection.
We invite you to visit the Flickr site regularly to see our expanded galleries.
You can also visit the archives Monday thru Friday. We are open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
